Productivity through
making friends Manual for SanCentre Managers
by Bjorn Brandberg
1. INTRODUCTION
Everybody is a manager
To be a manager sounds important, and it is. A Manager is a person who manages to get
things done, normally with the assistance of other people. You can be a manger in your
job, but you can also be a manager at home. Education of our children is one of the most
important management tasks we have. There are many examples of industrial leaders and
business people in important management positions who have given up their professional
career in order to dedicate themselves to make their successors (children) their great
management task. Education of children is also a great possibility for the manager in the
beginning of his career who need live experience in managing.
SanCentre Management
SanCentre is a name created especially for the implementation of low cost sanitation
programmes. Physically it may be the casting-yard where SanPlats are produced. Practically
it may involve many other functions like latrine building, teaching people how to build
improved latrines, promotion, hygiene education etc. It is from the SanCentre the local
sanitation programme is managed. The person in charge is therefore the SanCentre Manager.
The managers of the SanCentres have a key role to play in the
implementation of sanitation programmes. This manual addresses itself to the big and
important group of SanCentre Managers. It will probably also be of interest to other
people in managerial positions.
Some of the advice might seem elementary, but is given as most
SanCentre Managers have never been in a managing position before. It is based on some of
the latest material in the field of personnel management and it is likely to interest more
experienced managers.
You the SanCentre manger
As manager of a SanCentre, you have overall responsibility for the implementation of
improved sanitation in the area where your centre is located. There is nothing that can be
excluded from your responsibility.
Three things are however of special importance in your new role as
manager:
- PEOPLE (Personnel Management)
- PRODUCTION (Get the job done)
- PAPERS (Keep your records)
This manual concentrates on the first
element, PEOPLE, which is your most important resource.
