SanPlat Shareware Introduction
The General policy of LCS is to support any Low Cost Sanitation initiative. For that
purpose we have included a section with material which you can copy as you like. If not
mentioned, the author is Bjorn Brandberg.
Below is listed a Table of Contents of SanPlat Shareware. A brief description of
each item of shareware is written below. If you click on any of the names, then you
can see the detailed information of that item.
Imagineering Sanitation
"The good things with dreams put into action is that they come true" (Michael
LeBoeuf)
"Not very much happens without a dream. And for something great to happen, there must
be a great dream ... much more than a dreamer is required ... but the dream must be there
first" (Robert K. Greenleaf).
Saving 4 000 000 lives per year is a great dream, but that is only a
part of what is possible. Effects of improved sanitation are also: reduced malnutrition,
better resistance to other diseases, increased productivity, better economy, more
education, etc., not to speak about the happiness of being healthy.
How to Start a SanPlat Project
A condensed manual for successful latrine building in rural areas using the latest
developments of the SanPlat system
Getting started the right way helps to get a successful sanitation
project underway. This text gives detailed advice on one way of making it. With some
experience, this way can be modified and improved to fit the specific conditions you will
meet in areas so that you will learn better and better.
Making Flat SanPlats
SanPlats can be made either flat shaped or dome shaped, either big or small. This section
describes how to make small flat SanPlats by making use of the all in one mould. Big flat SanPlats are
made like any big slab except for special SanPlat features which you will find in the next
text: Making Dome Shaped SanPlats
Making Dome Shaped SanPlats
Of the one million SanPlats that we estimate have been made, at least 3 000 000 are dome
shaped. There are many good reasons for this like being cheaper to make, lighter in
weight, and being easy to transport by rolling.
This text explains how they are made and which moulds you would need.
Phasing-Out of Subsidies
Sustainability is possibly even more important than fast results, and subsidies can in
most cases not continue forever.
Public and Institutional Latrines
This text was developed as part of a workshop in Tanzania in 1989. Much has happened since
then, but we have still found that the text can be useful in many other situations.
Use its advice critically.
How to Work with People
Technology is only part of the job. As a manager, you need to learn how to work with
people. Some people have natural talent for this - lucky them! Others have to learn it
step by step as in any other job.
This manual addresses itself primarily to "grass roots"
managers in sanitation projects but draws on findings form classical management
literature, which also makes it useful for managers at senior levels.
